A set of Christmas-themed maths problems for year 1. Father Christmas has written ten Christmas word problems to get his elves thinking, but it seems the elves are better at making toys than they are at maths! Can children mark the elves' work and correct the wrong answers?

Children will: 

  • use number bonds and related subtraction facts within 20
  • add and subtract one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20
  • solve one-step problems that involve addition and subtraction
  • solve one-step problems involving multiplication and division
  • recognise, find and name a half as one of two equal parts or quantity.

Sample questions from the resource: 

Eve writes 14 Christmas cards and Noel writes 6. How many cards do they write altogether?

When Eve gets baubles out of the box, she finds that half of them are broken. There are 8 baubles in the box. How many are not broken?

Comet’s antlers are 3 cm taller than Vixen’s. Comet’s antlers are 20 cm tall. How tall are Vixen’s antlers?
