A-level reading: La tour Eiffel, le symbole de la France
A challenging and thought-provoking A-level French reading text on the colonial exploitation that motivated and helped to finance the construction of the Eiffel Tower.
It comes with the following tasks in the style of the AQA reading exam:
- multiple-choice questions to help students scan the text
- reading comprehension questions
- a 'find the synonyms' task
- a summary-writing task
- a translation from French to English.
The PowerPoint contains an image and discussion prompts that can be used as a starter and a further image with questions in the style of the AQA speaking exam.

Surnommée à juste titre la Dame de fer, la tour Eiffel est toujours debout plus de cent quarante ans plus tard, alors qu’elle devait être démolie au bout de vingt ans. Elle représente la France dans le monde entier et sa silhouette est instantanément reconnue. C'est un magnifique exploit d'ingénierie et d'architecture. Mais nous devons aussi diffuser l'idéologie derrière les sculptures. C'était la Révolution industrielle, lorsque les gens croyaient que le progrès était toujours une force positive pour le bien commun mais aussi que la planète était à notre disposition et que la terre devait être conquise par la force, le sol exploité et le ciel rempli de ballons et de dirigeables.
Il s'agit d'une idéologie dont nous devons nous défaire, car elle minimise les crimes commis en son nom.
