How to use the year 5 and 6 spelling list

This teaching resource comprises a set of 24 English spelling lists for year 5. Each spelling list features 10 spellings based on a particular prefix, suffix, letter string or spelling rule featured in the statutory and non-statutory spelling guidance in the National Curriculum, or based on the year 5 and year 6 word list as featured in English Appendix 1 from the Year 5/6 Programme of Study.

Simply photocopy cut out and send home spelling lists each week for children to practise for the weekly spelling test. The editable version for subscribers allows personalisation to accommodate individual needs, emphasising difficult words or introducing new terms.

How to use the spelling practice template

Support children with learning their year 5 and 6 spelling lists with the ready-to-use spelling template which uses the ‘look’, ‘say’, ‘cover’, ‘write’ and ‘check’ method for learning spellings.

• 'Look' — helps children notice the correct spelling of the word.
• 'Say' — encourages children to verbalise the word.
• 'Cover' — enables children to conceal the correct spelling and try to spell the word from memory.
• 'Write' — children jot down the word without looking at the correct spelling.
• 'Check' — children compare their spelling with the correct one to spot errors.

This method encourages independent learning and strengthens memory recall.
