Introduce students to the fun of the Eurovision Song Contest with this KS3 geography lesson. For 2023, the United Kingdom is hosting the contest on behalf of Ukraine. It’s a great opportunity for students to learn more about the countries involved and the impact of hosting an event like this.

Includes PowerPoint with starter, lesson activities and plenary as well as an accompanying worksheet. Students will practise writing locational descriptions, identify the social, economic and environmental impacts on Liverpool as the host city, and evaluate the overall impact.

For an additional activity that encourages students to use their atlas skills, try this Eurovision-themed map activity.

Read through each statement on the right and decide which category it fits into:
Social
Environmental
Economic
Remember that the statements could fit into more than one category.

1. Choose three statements from the table and explain why they are a benefit to Liverpool. (Hint: ensure the word ‘because’ is in each answer)
2. Suggest two reasons why jobs will be created in Liverpool.
3. Explain why this event could lead to the multiplier effect.
Challenge: Are all of the statements in the table completely positive? What might the negative impacts of the song contest be?
