A fun and inclusive way to learn or revise colours in German – through the LGBTQI+ flags. Ideal for use during LGBT History Month in February or Pride Month in June.

Students match the German words to their English translations. The teacher elicits what LGBTQI+ stands for in English and students match those gender identities to their German translations. Students then match the flags to their descriptions in German and do a pairwork activity describing and identifying the flags. Finally, they complete a gap-fill of the missing colour words.

The Word document is a colouring worksheet where students shade the segments of the flag according to the colours written in German. The PowerPoint includes audio recordings of the basic colour words by a native German speaker. The full list of colours included is:

  • braun
  • gelb
  • rot
  • rosa, hellrosa, dunkelrosa
  • grün, dunkel grün
  • schwarz
  • blau, hellblau, dunkelblau
  • weiß
  • lila, helllila, dunkellila
  • grau
  • orange, hellorange, dunkelorange.
