National Poetry Day: You choose!
Celebrate National Poetry Day with this simple but highly effective idea to help students to write their own poem by making careful word choices.
Trevor Millum, Teachit's poet in residence, shares his idea for writing poetry by taking students outside. They use audio or video to record their thoughts and ideas in detail, before choosing the bits they like the most, and then editing them into a poem.
This resource is student-facing and walks students through the process of making careful choices but without any barriers to them getting ideas down on paper.
Could be used on Outdoor Learning Day to get students working in nature!

Review this resourceThis will be an excellent resource when preparing my students to write about choice on National Poetry Day. The creative process is so helpfully explained. Many thanks.

From the always excellent Trevor Millum, this resource is about writing, and writing poetry. The process is simple but fundamental for all good writing: think and write, perhaps as much as you can, and then go back to start selecting (choosing, so spot on with the NPD theme this year) favourite lines and/or words. Then it is about further choosing - the editing, that crafting which helps the writer work towards their best. Positioning on the page can help as well. A perfect resource for National Poetry Day 2021.
